The Hockomock League is shaping up very similarly to how it did last year. Though there are many impressive teams and individuals within the league, besides Oliver Ames, most teams aren't looking to be mentioned much outside the league level. This article will cover all aspects of the Hockomock League and what to expect from them this season.
Key Individuals
- Kyle Twomey — Franklin
- Devon McStowe — Oliver Ames
- Corey Yifru — Oliver Ames
- Colin Donahue — Oliver Ames
- Nikita Cherapukha — Mansfield
- Anthony Malakidis — North Attleborough
- Sleeper: Trevor Martorana — Stoughton
Anthony Malakidis seems to be running away with the league title this year. He's an impressive distance runner and the No. 2 overall returner for the Meet of Champions. Behind him seem to be two Oliver Ames runners in Devon McStowe and Corey Yifru, as well as Nikita Cherapukha from Mansfield. Keep your eyes on Trevor Martorana from Stoughton, though. Although he only comes in with a 5K PR of 18:29, he's run a 4:27 mile and 2:02 800m on the track.
For the team outlook, Taunton seems to be at the bottom of the league this year. They're led by a strong No. 1 in Jordan Trucchi (16:39), although the rest of the team falls in the 20:00–21:00 range.
After that, the faceoff between Milford and Foxborough should be very exciting. Both teams enter with certain strengths. Milford has more top-end talent with Benjamin Tetreault (17:20) and Brian Flanagan (17:49), though Foxborough's depth could put them at an advantage in that specific matchup.
Attleboro comes in a bit above those two teams. They also have a solid No. 1 in Owen Lacaillade (16:27); however, their depth is another strength. They have many runners in the 18:00–19:00 range who can work together and move up.
Another big faceoff comes between Stoughton and North Attleborough. A major factor in this matchup is whether Trevor Martorana can step up and convert his track times to the grass. If that happens, Stoughton could put itself in a strong position against Malakidis and the rest of North Attleborough.
Canton and King Philip come in right around the middle of the league. Both schools have decent teams, with some standouts being Tristan Grant (17:23) from Canton, as well as Michael Joseph (16:40) and Liam Keleher (17:19) from King Philip. The boys from KP do have a sizable gap over the boys from Canton.
The biggest battle near the front is between Mansfield and Sharon. The faceoff between Nikita Cherapukha (16:14) of Mansfield and Alex Pinnix (16:14) of Sharon could play a major role in deciding the meet. Both teams have multiple runners in the 17:00 range, as well as some in the 18:00 range.
Franklin seems to be a step above both of these teams. They sit in a comfortable second place and have their top five returners all under 18:00. Kyle Twomey (16:23) and Sawyer Laing (17:05) will lead this squad.
Finally, Oliver Ames seems to once again be running away with the league, having four of the top 10 returners. Even without Sarney, this team still packs a serious punch. Devon McStowe (15:59) leads the team with a sub-16:00 5K. Jake Hauvuey (16:30), Colin Donahue (16:36), and Corey Yifru (16:39) also return to help Oliver Ames conquer the league. This team seems to be too strong for the rest of the league and has goals for higher levels of competition.
